I was having a pedicure with my mom and sister when I was reminded how good salt scrubs feel on your body! It’s the small things.
Ya’ll know I’m all about trying to live toxin free as much as possible. So when I looked at the ingredients of a typical salt scrub at the store– I couldn’t believe how much junk was in it. How many ingredients do you really need?!?
The one ingredient I really look for is the word “fragrance.” U.S. regulations on fragrance is simply to list the word as “Fragrance” or “Flavor.” They do not have to tell you what ingredients that consist of. The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) lists 3,059 materials that are reported as being used in fragrance compounds. Of these ingredients, some have evidence linking them to health effects including cancer, reproductive toxicity, allergies and sensitivities.
While we cannot avoid contact with all toxins I do try to eliminate where I can. So this Salt scrub is so easy to make & toxin free!
By rubbing the sea salt in circular motions you are exfoliating the skin and removing dead skin cells. This helps promote new skin cells, even skin tone, and improves texture of skin. You literally leave your skin glowing.
There are so many benefits to Himalayan salt including balancing the body’s pH levels, increases hydration, improves circulation, and reduces the appearance of aging.
Coconut oil is antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti-fungal. It is also a moisturizer.
This is where you get to have some fun! You really cannot go wrong here. Instead of toxic “fragrances” you get to add pure essential oils with amazing health benefits! I chose to use Frankincense & Geranium with this batch.
Frankincense comes from a tree called Boswellia. Boswellia is a powerful anti-inflammatory. Frankincense can kill harmful germs and bacteria (immune boosting). It can heal the skin, it is aging, reduces heart rate, reduce anxiety, strengthen skin, improve skin tone, reduce appearance of scars and improve circulation.
Geranium was used by the Egyptians to promote beautiful, radiant-looking skin. Some other benefits include reduce appearance of acne, reduce inflammation, alleviate anxiety, and balance hormones.
How To Make
- 1/4 cup + 2 T virgin coconut oil
- 1 cup Himalayan sea salt
- 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil
- Gently heat the coconut oil on the stove if it’s too solid to mix (this step isn’t necessary if yours is softened).
- Add all of the ingredients to a glass jar and mix well.
- Store in a closed jar.
- Use weekly by massaging onto your cleansed body after a shower and then rinse. Use caution if using on your face. The skin is delicate and this can be too abrasive for some
- This Himalayan salt scrub lasts about 6 months.
