Can you believe it? Chiropractors have been helping people feel better for 125 years! That’s something to celebrate. Many people, when they hear the word, chiropractic or chiropractor, immediately think, “cracking or popping” your neck or low back to get out of pain, but chiropractic is so much more than that.
Where did it come from?
The word Chiropractic, originates from the greek words cheir, meaning ‘hand’, and praktos, meaning ‘done’, i.e. Done by Hand. This name was chosen by its founder Daniel David Palmer, or DD Palmer. Although various forms of manipulations were performed for hundreds, if not thousands of years prior to the first chiropractic adjustment, DD Palmer was the one to develop a philosophical and scientific rationale to explain their effects. He is known as the founding father of Chiropractic and later went on to develop the first chiropractic school known as Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport Iowa, where it still stands to this day.
How did it start?
Chiropractic has an interesting inception. Did you know that the first chiropractic adjustment was performed not to help get someone out of pain, but to restore someone’s hearing! You read that right, a deaf man was able to hear again after he received the first chiropractic adjustment from DD Palmer. This man’s name was Harvey Lillard. Harvey worked as a janitor and stated that he felt something “give” in his back 17 years ago and since then, he has been unable to hear well. DD Palmer then examined the man and performed the first chiropractic “adjustment” to what he felt to be a displaced vertebrae in his upper back. After this crude adjustment, Mr. Lillard’s hearing improved! (1)
How has it changed, and how is it different today?
Chiropractic has come a long way since that first adjustment. Today chiropractors have to go through extensive hours of undergraduate and graduate school classes before they can receive the title of Doctor of Chiropractic. They must also pass four parts of boards given by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners to be licensed to practice. Chiropractors are still restoring health and decreasing pain by removing inference off of the nervous system and restoring motion to various joints in the spine and body, just as DD Palmer first proposed based on his extensive studies of anatomy and physiology. The philosophy remains the same, however, the art has become more perfected, and the science behind the profession has become more evidence based.
